The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it handled more than 100 gender-related cases between January and June 2026, recording significant progress in tackling gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable persons across the state.

Speaking during a media briefing at the command headquarters in Ilorin on Tuesday, State Commandant Abbas Nda Mohammed disclosed that the command secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sexual offender during the review period. He described the conviction as a reflection of the corps’ commitment to ensuring justice for victims of sexual and gender-based violence.

According to the commandant, the Gender Unit recorded 36 cases of domestic violence, with 12 still undergoing mediation. The unit also handled 19 child custody disputes, resolving 15 of them, while four cases remain pending.

He added that the command received 38 reports of child abandonment. Six cases have been resolved, while investigations and welfare interventions are ongoing in the remaining cases.

Mohammed also revealed that nine abduction cases were reported during the period, noting that the corps successfully reunited four victims with their families through timely intervention.

He further disclosed that eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation are currently before competent courts for prosecution, stressing that the command is determined to ensure offenders face the full weight of the law.

The commandant commended officers of the Gender Unit for their professionalism and dedication and urged residents to promptly report cases of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual offences and other forms of gender-based violence to the NSCDC.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women, children and other vulnerable groups through effective investigations, collaboration with relevant stakeholders and strict enforcement of the law.
