At least 15 people were injured, including one seriously, after two trams collided on Rotterdam’s Erasmus Bridge in the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The crash occurred on the landmark bridge spanning the River Maas, a key transport route in the Dutch port city. Webcam footage showed one tram slamming into the rear of another, leaving both vehicles heavily damaged and scattering debris across the roadway.

Emergency services responded swiftly, closing the bridge to traffic in both directions while rescue operations were carried out. An AFP reporter at the scene observed twisted metal and shattered glass as responders evacuated injured passengers using stretchers and wheelchairs.

The seriously injured victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

Rotterdam authorities initially reported that 18 people had been injured but later revised the figure to 15, according to Dutch public broadcaster NOS.

Rotterdam public transport operator RET said it was working with emergency services to establish the cause of the collision.

“We have seen the footage and are deeply shocked,” the company said in a statement. “In cooperation with the emergency services, we will do everything we can to uncover how this could have happened.”
