The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said Governor Seyi Makinde will eventually account for the funds received by his administration, insisting that neither the governor nor his government can avoid scrutiny by anti-graft agencies.

The party made the statement on Thursday while reacting to a Federal High Court judgment delivered in Ibadan, which held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) lacks the power to investigate the finances of the current Oyo State administration.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, the APC expressed disappointment with the court’s decision and criticised what it described as efforts by the governor to shield his administration from investigation.

The opposition party argued that the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies would carry out their statutory responsibilities at the appropriate time, adding that Makinde would be required to account for all public funds received by his administration since assuming office in 2019.

“The question on the lips of many patriots now is: why would a governor be afraid to render account of resources given to him on trust to benefit the citizenry?” the statement read.

The APC further stated that the governor “can only run but cannot hide,” insisting that anti-graft agencies would eventually investigate the state’s finances and uncover any wrongdoing, if established.

The party’s comments followed Wednesday’s ruling by the Federal High Court in Ibadan, which limited the EFCC’s authority to investigate the finances of the serving Oyo State government.
