Renowned scholar and former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Emeritus Professor Musbau Adewumi Akanji, has decried the growing culture of illegal acquisition of wealth in Nigeria, saying no one will take anything to the grave.

In a statement released to mark Jumu’ah, Professor Akanji, who is also the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, said the reality of death should serve as a reminder to those amassing stupendous wealth through illegitimate means.

He noted that “shroud has no provision for pocket, grave has no vault, and heaven and hell have no bank,” adding that daily burials should remind people that material possessions end at the grave.

The former VC expressed concern over recent reports from the courts revealing cases of young people in their 30s living in multibillion-naira houses, women owning jewelry worth billions, and public servants in their 50s allegedly acquiring trillions of naira in assets after just 8 years in service.

Professor Akanji also condemned acts of kidnapping, banditry and murder, citing the life imprisonment handed to those who abducted and killed teachers and filmed the act. He argued that the absence of swift and public punishment for past offenders has emboldened current criminals.

Citing Qur’anic verses, he said those who commit such crimes do not believe in Allah or the Day of Accountability, and that Allah has assured that everyone will get what they deserve regardless of earthly judgment.

He called on Nigerians to fear Allah in all their dealings and to uphold justice, warning that failure to punish crime decisively will continue to fuel corruption and insecurity.
