The crisis in the Ondo State House of Assembly has deepened as some lawmakers accused Speaker Hon. Olamide Oladiji of stalling legislative activities.

The lawmakers alleged that the House has held only four plenary sittings in the last seven months, saying the situation has slowed lawmaking and oversight.

“Whenever he notices there are issues, he will not call plenary. He waits until the tension has died down,” one lawmaker said.

Assembly spokesman Olatunji Fabiyi countered that parliamentary meetings are part of legislative duties. He disclosed that members met with the Speaker recently and asked him to resign.

Speaker Oladiji denied the allegations and challenged the lawmakers to provide evidence. He said parliamentary sittings are as important as plenary and that bill processing depends largely on the Executive.

Legal experts say Section 104 of the 1999 Constitution requires a State Assembly to sit for at least 181 days a year, covering plenary, committee and parliamentary meetings.
