The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has urged Nigerians to pay closer attention to food products before purchasing them, particularly by checking their registration details, ingredients and expiry dates.

The issue was discussed on Standpoint, a programme hosted by Bukola Omoshewo, featuring Dr. Ayinla Ibrahim Kuranga Snr. Leacturer of University of Ilorin and Dr. Mubarak Sulaimon Jamiu of Kwara State University as guests.

Dr. Kuranga explained that consumers should check four key details before buying food products from the market. These include the product date, the ingredients, the NAFDAC registration number and the expiry date.

He stressed the importance of checking the ingredients, especially for consumers who may be allergic or sensitive to certain substances. Using himself as an example, he said he avoids drinks containing caffeine because consuming them affects his sleep.

Dr. Kuranga also explained the role of NAFDAC and the importance of verifying a product’s NAFDAC registration number to determine whether it has been approved for consumption.

The programme also featured discussions on Kwara State politics, including developments involving former Senate President Bukola Saraki, the Turaki of Ilorin, and Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe.

Dr. Mubarak, who also participated in the discussion, spoke on the recent kidnapping of members of the Yashikira royal family in Woro.

He commended the government for its swift response in securing the victims and urged authorities to strengthen security measures and act proactively against criminal activities.

He also called for increased security presence at strategic locations, including border areas, to prevent unauthorised entry into the country.
