The factional National Chairman of the Accord Party and its 2023 presidential candidate, *Prof. Christopher Imumolen*, has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race and endorsed *President Bola Tinubu* for a second term.
Speaking at a news conference in Lagos on Friday, Imumolen said the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders and members, and was guided by national interest rather than partisan considerations.
He said Tinubu is “well positioned” to win in 2027 due to ongoing reforms, leadership, and growing nationwide support, arguing that Nigerians are beginning to see the long-term benefits of the administration’s agenda despite current economic challenges.
“Tinubu will win because of his people-oriented programmes and the massive support he has received from different parts of the country,” Imumolen said.
“There must be continuity. If another person comes in 2027, he will have to start all over again. He has identified the challenges, and we need to move to the next phase. My support is total.”
Imumolen listed 10 reasons for the endorsement, including Tinubu’s courage in implementing difficult economic reforms, demonstrated leadership, commitment to progressive governance, deliberate youth empowerment, bridging generational leadership, and appointing competent individuals to strategic offices. Other reasons cited were policy continuity, political stability, transparency, and placing national interest above personal ambition.
He noted that the President’s reform agenda aligns with Accord’s manifesto on economic transformation, education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, industrialisation, and national development.
Acknowledging past criticism, Imumolen said: “Over the last four years, I was one of those who criticised the President. However, I have also witnessed his leadership style and the progress his administration has made.”
He commended Tinubu for appointing young Nigerians to strategic positions and said continuity was vital for attracting investment, creating jobs, and strengthening institutions.
Imumolen stressed there was “no hidden agenda” and that the party’s decision was based on performance. He added that Accord would still contest governorship, legislative, and other elections nationwide (NAN)
