The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has warned motorists and other road users against violating traffic laws, saying offenders will face legal action.

The command said it would sustain its statewide traffic enforcement exercise across the state’s 31 local government areas.

In a statement issued in Uyo on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, urged motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and tricycle operators to comply with existing traffic regulations.

She said the exercise was aimed at improving road safety, reducing avoidable crashes, protecting lives and property, and ensuring orderly movement of people and vehicles across the state.

The command said officers would pay particular attention to offences including driving against traffic, driving without valid vehicle documents or a driver’s licence, and using covered, concealed, defaced or unauthorised number plates.

The police also listed the use of unregistered vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles among offences that would attract enforcement.

“Anyone apprehended for violating traffic laws will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse,” John said.

She added that Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, traffic officers and other operational units had been directed to intensify enforcement within their jurisdictions.

John, however, said officers had been instructed to conduct the exercise professionally and respectfully, stressing that extortion, harassment, unnecessary delays and other forms of unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated.
