Army Chief Assesses Security Threats in Sokoto’s Kebbe

The General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgba Koughna, has visited Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State to assess the security situation following renewed threats allegedly linked to the Lakurawa terrorist group.

Koughna’s visit followed reports of a fresh attack on Ungushi community and growing concerns over insecurity along the Sokoto-Kebbi border. The development has reportedly forced some residents to leave affected communities amid attacks and livestock rustling.

During the visit, the GOC inspected the Forward Operating Base in Kebbe and surrounding areas. He also met with community leaders and residents to hear their concerns and review the security situation.

Koughna assured residents that the Army had strengthened its security measures to prevent terrorist infiltration and protect vulnerable communities.

“Troops remain fully deployed, highly alert and operationally focused on protecting lives and property,” he said.

He added that the Army had introduced measures to detect and contain emerging threats before they escalate, stressing that terrorist groups would not be allowed to establish safe havens in Kebbe or neighbouring communities.

The Army chief urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, assuring them that security personnel were working to restore confidence in affected areas.

He also called for stronger cooperation between communities and security agencies, particularly through the prompt sharing of credible intelligence.

Koughna urged residents to report suspicious movements, unfamiliar persons and other activities that could threaten security. He said effective intelligence-sharing remained critical to disrupting terrorist networks and preventing further attacks.

The assessment is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to strengthen security around Kebbe and other vulnerable communities following recent incidents in the area.
