Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested two suspected members of a ‘one chance’ robbery syndicate operating in Abeokuta.
The suspects, identified as 42-year-old Olajide Rasaq and 29-year-old Bidemi Tijani, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation on Saturday.
The command said it received information that members of the syndicate were disguising themselves as commercial taxi operators to rob unsuspecting passengers of their phones, cash and other valuables.
According to the police, the suspects were spotted in a taxi heading towards the Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta. VCRU operatives reportedly pursued the vehicle and arrested the two men.
Confirming the arrests on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the suspects allegedly confessed during interrogation to being active members of the robbery syndicate.
Babaseyi said investigations were continuing to identify and arrest other members of the group, determine the extent of their operations and recover suspected stolen items.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism during the operation.
Ojajuni warned criminal elements that the command would intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks across the state.
He also urged residents and commuters to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the Gateway Shield platform or the police emergency lines.
