INEC Promises Neutrality Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Josiah Amupitan, has assured political parties and Nigerians that the commission will remain neutral throughout the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan gave the assurance on Tuesday at the National Peace Accord ceremony ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He said INEC had no preferred candidate or political party and would treat all participants equally.

“INEC has no interest in who wins or loses any election. The commission does not have a candidate, nor does it favour any political platform,” Amupitan said.

The INEC chairman urged political parties and candidates to base their campaigns on policies and practical solutions rather than violence, insults and personal attacks.

“Let the 2027 election campaign be a marketplace of ideas, not a theatre of war,” he said, adding that Nigerians deserved clear and measurable programmes from those seeking their votes.

Amupitan also said INEC’s preparations for the 2027 elections were progressing, with the commission strengthening its logistics and operational capacity for the nationwide exercise.

He disclosed that the commission was preparing to deploy about 1.4 million ad hoc personnel across more than 176,000 polling units.

“Nigerians do not want insults; they want solutions. They deserve to hear clear, concrete, and measurable manifestos,” Amupitan said.
