Osun Governor Adeleke Receives Green Leadership Award

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has received a Green Leadership Award for his administration’s efforts to promote climate action, renewable energy and environmental sustainability.

The award was presented at the 1st International and 3rd National Women Green Summit and Exhibition 2026, organised by the Women in Renewable Energy Association in Lagos.

Adeleke was represented at the event by the Director-General and Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, who received the award on his behalf and delivered his goodwill message.

The organisers said the recognition was based on policies and programmes introduced by the Osun government, including the Osun State Climate Action Plan, Renewable Energy Policy, Circular Economy Action Plan and Climate-Smart Investment Portfolio.

They also cited initiatives covering solar energy, recycling, waste management, ecosystem restoration and sustainable transportation. These include a recycling hub, the IMOLE solar lantern programme aimed at improving access to clean lighting for students, and electric-motorbike initiatives.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Obuaku-Igwe said climate action should deliver tangible economic and social benefits.

“Climate action must translate into opportunities for our people. It must create jobs, strengthen livelihoods, expand energy access, encourage innovation and build a more resilient economy,” she said.

She also called for greater participation by women and young people in Africa’s transition to a green economy, stressing the importance of access to finance, technology, skills and markets.

Obuaku-Igwe said the state was ready to deepen partnerships with investors, development institutions, researchers and private-sector organisations to scale climate-smart projects and attract green investment.

She described women as “not merely beneficiaries but critical drivers of Africa’s green transition,” and commended the organisers for bringing stakeholders together to advance the sector.
