Kwara State Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi has directed police officers to stop indiscriminately searching the mobile phones of National Youth Service Corps members under the guise of checking for internet fraud.
Adekimi issued the warning on Wednesday during a visit to the NYSC Orientation Camp, where 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members are undergoing their orientation programme.
According to a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the commissioner assured the corps members of adequate security throughout their service year and urged them to report any misconduct by police personnel.
“No police officer should indiscriminately search through the mobile phones of corps members on the road under the guise of checking whether they are involved in internet fraud,” Adekimi said.
He said corps members were entitled to dignity and respect in their dealings with the police, adding that they should report security concerns or inappropriate conduct through the command’s designated channels or at the nearest police formation.
The commissioner also urged the corps members to use social media responsibly and avoid digital thuggery and other activities that could threaten public order.
“You are leaders of today and possess enormous potential to contribute positively to national development,” he said, encouraging them to make meaningful contributions to their host communities.
Adekimi further assured the corps members that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would take necessary measures to protect them wherever they were deployed across Kwara State.
He commended the camp commandant and other security personnel for maintaining a safe environment and wished the corps members a productive orientation and rewarding service year.
