Pep Guardiola is regarded as one of football’s most successful managers, but his demanding methods and uncompromising approach have also led to strained relationships with several high-profile players.
From Barcelona to Bayern Munich and Manchester City, a number of players have spoken publicly about disagreements with the Spanish coach.
According to Planet Football, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s relationship with Guardiola deteriorated during the striker’s only season at Barcelona in 2009/10. Ibrahimovic later criticised the manager while acknowledging his coaching ability.
Samuel Eto’o also had a difficult relationship with Guardiola at Barcelona. The Cameroon international left the club for Inter Milan in 2009 after playing an important role in the team’s earlier success. He later spoke critically about his experience under Guardiola.
Yaya Toure worked with Guardiola at both Barcelona and Manchester City. Their relationship became strained, with Toure once accusing Guardiola of having a problem with African players. He later apologised for the remarks before leaving Manchester City in 2018.
Joe Hart was another prominent casualty of Guardiola’s arrival at Manchester City in 2016. The goalkeeper said Guardiola told him that he did not fit the profile he wanted, leading to Hart losing his place before leaving the club.
Joao Cancelo initially became an important part of Guardiola’s Manchester City side, but their relationship eventually broke down. He was loaned to Bayern Munich in 2023 and later criticised the way he was treated by the club.
Kyle Walker, despite winning major honours under Guardiola, also experienced tensions with the manager before his eventual departure from Manchester City. The England defender later described some of their conversations as uncomfortable.
At Barcelona, Alexander Hleb struggled to establish himself under Guardiola. Hleb later acknowledged that he had contributed to their difficulties, particularly after failing to respond positively to Guardiola’s request that he learn Spanish.
Cesc Fabregas also had a complicated relationship with Guardiola during his time at Barcelona. Fabregas had admired Guardiola since childhood but later revealed that they no longer maintained a relationship, despite the lessons he learned from the manager.
Dante, who worked with Guardiola at Bayern Munich, later criticised the manager’s communication style, arguing that his tactical ability did not always translate into strong personal relationships.
Despite these disputes, Guardiola has built an exceptional managerial record, including multiple league titles and Champions League success. His intense standards and tactical demands have been central to that success, even though they have occasionally resulted in clashes with players.
