The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Gombe State University branch, has suspended its planned total and indefinite strike, giving the Gombe State Government and the university management until the end of October 2026 to implement agreements reached with the union.
The decision was announced in a resolution issued after the union’s congress meeting held on Friday.
The resolution was signed by the branch chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and the secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.
ASUU said the congress considered a letter from the Gombe State Government confirming the commencement of the implementation of a new salary scale for academic staff.
The union also reviewed a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the university management on the payment of outstanding salary arrears and other entitlements owed to its members.
Following deliberations, the congress resolved to suspend the planned industrial action to give the government and the university management an opportunity to fulfil their commitments.
“The Congress, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the planned commencement of the industrial action in order to give both the government and the university management the benefit of doubt on the implementation of the promises by the end of October 2026,” the resolution stated.
However, the union warned that the suspension was conditional and would only remain in effect if the agreements were fully implemented within the agreed timeframe.
ASUU said it would proceed with the planned indefinite strike if the government and university management failed to honour the commitments contained in the agreement by the end of October.
