Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi’s political camps are finalising their campaign structures and plans for the 2027 presidential election as parties step up preparations following the opening of the campaign season.
Atiku, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, is consulting on the composition of his campaign council and the timing of its formal launch. His Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the details would be announced after consultations are concluded.
He said Atiku’s campaign would also unveil its fundraising framework in line with campaign-finance laws, promising transparency and accountability. Shaibu added that the candidate would focus on policy issues, including a proposed targeted, production-linked fuel subsidy aimed at supporting domestic refining and easing pressure on consumers.
The National Democratic Congress, whose presidential candidate is Peter Obi, is similarly working on its campaign structure. National Publicity Secretary Osa Director said the group would meet next weekend to determine its campaign timetable and other details. He said the campaign would target all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, meanwhile, criticised the APC’s newly constituted presidential campaign council, questioning whether its composition represented continuity with the current administration. He also raised concerns about senior public officials serving in campaign fundraising and finance roles.
The Labour Party has yet to announce its campaign timetable. Its presidential candidate, Chibuzor Okereke, said the party’s strategy team was still determining the launch date and venue.
The Young Progressives Party has, however, fixed September 9 for the formal launch of its presidential campaign. Candidate Peter Agada said his campaign structure was already in place, with plans for a nationwide mobilisation beginning in Lagos and extending across the geopolitical zones.
The APC has announced a 223-member campaign council headed by former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari as Director-General, while Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma will serve as secretary. The party is yet to announce the date and venue for its campaign launch.
With the 2027 election season underway, political parties and alliances are expected to intensify nationwide mobilisation and unveil their campaign programmes in the coming weeks.
