Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has drawn mixed reactions on social media after celebrating her birthday on Monday, the same day veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was buried in Ilaro, Ogun State.

Akindele, who marked her birthday on Monday, thanked God for another year and prayed for good health, longevity and the grace to fulfil her purpose.

“Today is my birthday. My heart is full of gratitude to God for all He has done, all He is doing, and all that is still to come,” she wrote on Instagram.

She also prayed for her life to positively influence others, saying she hoped her journey would inspire people to believe, dream and persevere.

The post attracted criticism from some social media users who felt the timing was insensitive, given that Ogogo had died on Sunday at the age of 66 and was being buried the following day. Some argued that Akindele, as a prominent figure in the film industry, should have shown greater restraint.

Others, however, defended the actress, saying she had every right to acknowledge her birthday despite the death of a colleague. They argued that mourning and personal celebrations could take place at the same time and that individuals should not be pressured to suspend their lives because of another person’s death.

Ogogo was buried in Ilaro on Monday according to Islamic rites. His funeral was attended by family members, friends and several colleagues, including Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko, Faithia Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Mr Latin and Toyosi Adesanya.

The veteran actor, who was prominent in Yoruba-language films, died after battling stage-four cancer. His death has continued to generate tributes across the Nigerian entertainment industry.
