Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate Donald Duke says President Bola Tinubu could win the 2027 presidential election if opposition parties fail to unite behind a single candidate.
Duke made the remarks on Monday where he discussed ongoing efforts by opposition parties to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
According to him, a divided opposition would give Tinubu a significant advantage and could allow the president to win without securing a majority of the total votes cast.
Absolutely, with the chequered opposition, it won’t work; Tinubu might win,Duke said.
He described such a victory as a minority government,arguing that Tinubu could secure another term with a relatively small share of the vote if his opponents split their support among several candidates.
If Tinubu wins, it will still be a minority government. He won’t get a majority of the votes cast on election day,he said.
Duke noted that Tinubu won about 37 per cent of the votes in the 2023 presidential election and suggested that his share could be even lower in 2027 if the opposition remains fragmented.
Last time he had about 37 per cent of the votes. So that scenario may replay itself. It may even be less. He may get maybe 25 per cent,he said.
Duke said Tinubu’s path to victory would largely depend on the opposition’s inability to agree on a common candidate, allowing him to emerge with a plurality of votes.
