The Kano State Police Command has arrested 79 suspects and recovered dangerous weapons and illicit drugs during security operations carried out around the 2026 Takutaba celebration.

The arrests were made as part of coordinated security operations deployed across the state before, during and after the celebration, which was held on September 1.

According to the command, the festivities passed peacefully across Kano following intelligence-led and proactive security measures put in place to prevent crime and maintain public order.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said the operations involved the command’s tactical units, including the Anti-Daba, Anti-Kidnapping and VCRU units.

Personnel from the Ungogo, Sharada, Bachirawa, Rijiyar Lemo, Mandawari, Kwalli and Gwale police divisions also participated in the operations.

The command’s spokesman, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said in a statement that the 79 suspects were arrested for various alleged offences, although the police did not provide details of the individual allegations.

“Dangerous weapons and illicit drugs were recovered during the operations,” the statement said, adding that the suspects remained under investigation.

The police said the suspects would be charged to court after investigations were concluded.

Bakori commended residents for maintaining peace and cooperating with security agencies throughout the celebration, saying their conduct contributed to the orderly observance of the event.
