The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has urged broadcasters to adhere strictly to the provisions of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code when reporting political activities and producing political programmes.

EMIRATE RADIO Internship reporter, Safara Muhammad reports that, the advice was given at a one day training exercise organized on Thursday by Emirate Radio 98.5FM Ilorin, with the NBC officials, including State Officer Adebayo Makinde and Monitoring Officer Suleiman Daibu.

Mr.Adebayo stressed the importance of fairness, balance, objectivity, impartiality, accountability and truthfulness in news and current affairs programmes.

Broadcasters were also reminded to understand the NBC Code, which provides guidelines for broadcasting practice and is reviewed periodically.

He advised broadcasters to maintain a clear distinction between their personal views and professional responsibilities. Presenters were encouraged to allow guests and members of the public to express their opinions rather than imposing their own views. They were also warned against the use of hate speech, speculation, unverified allegations and statements that could cause crises or mislead the audience.

On political broadcasting, broadcasters were advised to provide useful information about elections, including when elections are taking place, voter registration and who is qualified to vote. Political programmes should clearly identify their purpose and must be handled fairly. Broadcasters were also encouraged to maintain proper records, including a logbook for political programmes.

The NBC boss further highlighted the need to treat callers and programme participants fairly and prevent abusive language during live broadcasts. In political advertising, broadcasters were reminded to ensure equitable treatment of political parties and avoid the misuse of broadcasters’ voices in political jingles.

At the close of the training, the overall message was that broadcasters must exercise professionalism and responsibility while ensuring that their content serves the public interest.
