The Kano State Government is set to begin trial testing of the Thomas Water Treatment Plant after more than six years of abandonment and deterioration.

The 2.4 million-litre-per-day facility, which serves Makoda, Kunya, Danbatta and neighbouring communities, became non-functional due to electromechanical faults, vandalised power equipment and extensive leakages along its pipeline network.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru M. Hashim, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying rehabilitation work at the plant was nearing completion.

Hashim said the restoration was part of the state government’s efforts to revive water schemes that had become dysfunctional across Kano.

He said the ministry would commence full trial testing of the Thomas plant shortly after the rehabilitation work is completed.

The commissioner also said rehabilitation work on the Joda, Guzu-guzu, Magaga and Faɗa regional water schemes had reached their final stages.

According to him, restoring the facilities is expected to improve water supply and help reduce shortages in communities across the state.

Hashim attributed the projects to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration’s efforts to restore critical water infrastructure and improve access to potable water in Kano.
