Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has approved the establishment of an advisory committee to examine controversial remarks allegedly made by Islamic scholars in the state and their reported impact on peace and religious harmony.

The development was announced in a statement issued on September 15, 2026, by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, Sokoto.

The committee’s formation follows controversy surrounding remarks attributed to Islamic scholar Malam Musa Lukuwa, which have reportedly sparked disagreements within sections of the Muslim community and raised concerns about their effect on public order.

The committee will be chaired by Malam Yahaya na Malam Boyi, the Sarkin Malamai. Its members include Malam Muhammad Isah Mafara, Malam Bello na Malam Boyi, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim Sa’id and representatives of various Islamic organisations.

Representatives of Izala from Kaduna and Jos, Tijaniyyah, Qadiriyyah, Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the Sultanate Council are also members of the committee. The state Commissioner for Religious Affairs is included as well.

Malam Lawal Maidoki and Barrister Gandi Umar Muhammad were also named as members, with Muhammad serving as secretary.

The government directed the committee to examine the position of Shari’ah on the issues raised by Lukuwa and provide recommendations to the state government.

The committee has been given 14 days to submit its report as authorities seek to address the dispute and prevent further tensions linked to religious utterances in the state.
