The death of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna has cast a harsh spotlight on the intersecting crises of poverty, child labor, and law enforcement in Niger State.

The tragedy unfolded following a crackdown by the NSCDC around the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto village mining axes. Scores of individuals were arrested, highlighting a persistent cycle where impoverished youths and children abandon schooling for illegal mining pits, only to return after raids due to a lack of viable alternatives.

Survivors alleged that 65 detainees were crammed into a severely overcrowded, poorly ventilated cell. According to accounts, frantic pleas for fresh air were ignored, leaving some detainees to suffer extreme dehydration and suffocation before bodies were transferred to the General Hospital, Minna.

The deaths sparked violent protests and vandalism across Minna, forcing the state government to impose a strict curfew. In response, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago established a high-powered committee of inquiry headed by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba to investigate the root causes, while the NSCDC Commandant-General suspended the state commandant and key officers.

Inspector-General of Police Rilwan Disu visited the state to pledge a thorough, transparent investigation alongside federal security agencies. Meanwhile, former military Head of State General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida condemned the incident and appealed for calm as autopsies and forensic examinations proceed.
