Two inmates have died following a cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed.

According to a statement issued by NCoS spokesperson Chief Superintendent of Corrections JN Osuji, the outbreak was detected on September 17 after an inmate presented with severe vomiting and diarrhea. Laboratory tests conducted alongside Kano State public health authorities officially confirmed the disease on September 23.

The NCoS reported that emergency medical protocols were immediately activated. One inmate passed away at the facility’s medical center, while the second death occurred after the patient was transferred to the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital.

Controller-General of Corrections Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and confirmed that the outbreak has been brought under control, with no additional fatalities recorded since the initial diagnosis.

In response to the incident, the NCoS has deployed a team of senior medical personnel from its national headquarters to the facility for continuous monitoring. Authorities have also partnered with the Kano State Government to enhance disease surveillance, early detection protocols, and preventive sanitation measures across all custodial facilities.
