Young Nigerian Develops Smart Robot for Home Safety

A young Nigerian technology enthusiast, Yahaya Yahaya, is developing a smart security robot designed to detect potential threats in homes and provide early warnings to residents.

The project, which Yahaya calls a “Smart Security and Danger Detection” robot, is being developed to detect incidents including unauthorised entry, fire, gas leaks and poor air quality.

Speaking to SolaceBase on Friday, Yahaya said the robot is designed to detect when an unauthorised person enters a room or home and trigger a loud alarm intended to deter the intruder.

The system is also being equipped with a SIM800L communication module that can place a voice call to the homeowner when an intrusion or other potential danger is detected. This could allow residents who are away from home to alert family members, neighbours or security personnel.

Beyond security monitoring, Yahaya said the robot would use sensors to detect household hazards such as fire, gas leakage and unhealthy air, providing an additional layer of protection.

The project is part of a growing interest among young Nigerians in developing locally designed technology to address practical challenges. Robotics, electronics, sensors and communication systems are increasingly being explored for applications beyond entertainment and social media.

However, the robot remains under development, and its effectiveness will depend on factors including sensor accuracy, reliable power supply, proper testing and effective alert systems. Such systems also need to minimise false alarms to ensure that warnings are triggered only when necessary.

For Yahaya, the project is an effort to turn a technological idea into a practical safety solution while demonstrating the capacity of young Nigerians to design and build technology for local needs.
