Troops Kill Suspected ISWAP Commander in Ondo Forest Operation

A combined security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, has reportedly killed a senior ISWAP commander in a forest in Owo, Ondo State.

Security expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the development on Monday, citing security sources who said the operation was conducted at the weekend following intelligence on the activities of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The ISWAP commander, identified as Abdussamad Ohida, also known as Anwar, was reportedly killed alongside several other members of the group after security forces raided their hideout.

According to the report, Ohida had previously served as deputy to Abu Ikrimah, also known as Abu Uwais, who was identified as the leader of ISWAP’s Central Nigeria faction. Ikrimah was reportedly arrested by Nigerian security operatives in 2023.

Following his arrest, Ohida allegedly assumed a leadership role in ISWAP activities across parts of the North-Central and southern regions, where he was involved in planning and coordinating attacks.

Security sources said intelligence obtained during the interrogation of Ikrimah helped the DSS uncover an alleged plan by Ohida to attack civilians during the forthcoming festive period.

“The plan was to attack civilians during the festive period and ultimately disrupt the 2027 general elections,” one of the sources was quoted as saying.

The source added that the intelligence was corroborated by UK security partners, who subsequently supported the operation that led to Ohida’s death.

Ohida was also accused of planning and carrying out the December 31, 2025, attack on the Ipele Divisional Police Station in Owo, during which AK-47 rifles were reportedly stolen before the station was destroyed with explosives.
