Plateau Monarch Dies After Gunmen Attack Residence in Bokkos

The traditional ruler of Daffo community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Da Jatau Yohanna Samkwar, has died after gunmen attacked his residence and shot him, according to community leaders.

The monarch, known as the Mishkaham Bokkos, was attacked on Monday night. A community youth leader, Malo Stephen, said the assailants shot him in the leg and head before he was rushed to a hospital in Daffo. He later died on Wednesday after being referred for further treatment.

Stephen confirmed the incident to journalists on Thursday, alleging that the attackers arrived at the monarch’s residence and fired sporadically before entering the compound and shooting him. The identities of the assailants have not been independently established.

He also disclosed that one of the monarch’s sons had been kidnapped earlier but was released on Sunday, a day before the attack on his father.

Stephen expressed concern over recurring attacks and killings in Bokkos, saying residents were increasingly worried about their safety. He called on security agencies to strengthen efforts to address the persistent insecurity in the area.

The Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, Kefas Mallai, also confirmed the incident to journalists on Wednesday and expressed concern over the repeated attacks.

Mallai further disclosed that three people were reportedly attacked while travelling on a motorcycle along a road linking communities in the area. Two of them were allegedly killed, while the third sustained injuries.

The latest incidents have heightened concerns among residents over the security situation in Bokkos, with community leaders urging authorities to take stronger measures to protect lives and property.
