Nigeria Records No Ebola Cases After Patient’s Evacuation to Switzerland

The World Health Organisation’s Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohammed Janabi, has announced that Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the evacuation of an infected Swiss national and her husband to Switzerland.

Janabi disclosed this in a post on X on Monday, confirming that the pair were evacuated earlier in the day by air ambulance.

The evacuation was also confirmed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who said both individuals were Swiss citizens.

According to Janabi, the patient was clinically stable following treatment by Nigerian medical personnel, who successfully managed her condition through the acute phase of the illness.

He commended the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and partner organisations for their roles in managing the case.

“On behalf of WHO and all partners, I warmly congratulate the Government of Nigeria, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and all those involved in the response,” he said, describing the outcome as evidence of the effectiveness of coordinated public health efforts.

Janabi, however, stressed that surveillance and follow-up would continue despite the evacuation. Nigeria will maintain close monitoring of 52 contacts, while Swiss authorities will oversee the patient’s continued care and monitor her husband, identified as contact number 53.

“With the evacuation of the patient and her husband, Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases,” Janabi stated.

He praised the response as a demonstration of African expertise and leadership in public health, while emphasising the importance of continued vigilance to prevent further transmission.
