Four people have been killed and 16 others injured after a container truck overturned onto an interstate Toyota Hiace bus on Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 28, when an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with the bus, registered GME-589 ZU.
According to the agency, preliminary findings indicated that the truck was travelling up the bridge at excessive speed when the driver lost control while attempting to avoid the collision, causing the truck and container to overturn onto the bus. Four adult men were confirmed dead at the scene, while 16 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
LASEMA said its Beta Whales Team from the Epe Base responded to a distress call and worked with the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police to secure the scene, administer first aid and evacuate the injured to Epe General Hospital. A private crane was engaged to recover the overturned truck and container, while traffic management measures were introduced. The recovery operation was ongoing at the time of the report.
In separate incidents on Wednesday, LASEMA teams also responded to road accidents in Agege and Igando. In Agege, a truck, with registration number KTU-940XT, rammed into a solar-powered streetlight pole near Vetland School along Old Abeokuta Road before mounting the road median and obstructing traffic. No casualties were recorded, although the truck and streetlight pole were damaged.
The agency attributed the Agege incident to reckless driving. Its team diverted traffic and later deployed heavy-duty recovery equipment to remove the truck, which was taken to Abattoir Police Station for investigation and safekeeping. The road was subsequently cleared and reopened.
In Igando, a DAF truck, registered SMK 795 XY, collided with a Toyota Corolla, registered AKD 169 EA, at Lanre Bus Stop along LASU-Igando Road. LASEMA said a broken-down truck on the opposite side had caused traffic congestion before the DAF truck, which was allegedly driving against traffic, struck the car.
The collision blocked half of the road inward Igando. The Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury and was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate. The car was moved to Igando Police Station, while LASEMA deployed its Super Metro recovery equipment to remove the DAF truck and restore traffic flow. The operation was still ongoing.
The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the Berger Bridge crash and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It also commended LASEMA, the police and the FRSC for their response to the incidents.
Motorists were urged to observe speed limits, avoid driving against traffic and other dangerous manoeuvres, and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy before travelling. Residents were also advised to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free lines.
