Labour Party Urges Nigerians to Back Candidates in 2027 Elections

The Labour Party has urged Nigerians to support its candidates in the 2027 general elections, citing Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election as an example of how voters can use the ballot to promote social democracy.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, made the appeal in a statement on Friday while congratulating Lula on his reported victory in Brazil’s October 25 presidential run-off.

Lula secured 51.79 per cent of valid votes to defeat his challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, who polled 48.21 per cent, according to the figures cited by the party. The result gives Lula a fourth, non-consecutive term as president.

Asogwa said the Labour Party and Brazil’s Workers’ Party shared ideological commitments to social justice, economic inclusion and improved welfare for citizens.

He described Lula’s victory as a reflection of the confidence Brazilian voters had placed in his leadership and the social democratic principles of his party.

“As Nigeria prepares for the coming general elections, the Labour Party wishes to use this opportunity to encourage Nigerians to draw inspiration from the Brazilian experience by supporting Labour Party candidates across all elective positions,” he said.

The party spokesman also cited the administration of Abia State Governor Alex Otti as evidence of the Labour Party’s capacity to provide leadership and address the needs of Nigerians.

He argued that the party’s political philosophy offered an alternative approach to governance, with emphasis on citizens’ welfare, equitable development and economic opportunities.

Asogwa urged Nigerians to remain confident in the party ahead of the 2027 elections, saying Brazil’s experience showed how voters could influence the political direction of their country through the ballot.

“The Brazilian experience has demonstrated the power of the people to shape their political destiny through the ballot. The same is possible in Nigeria, because people power is greater than political power,” he added.
