The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed reports that activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was abducted by armed men in Ado-Ekiti.
The reports emerged on Friday after eyewitnesses claimed that armed men stormed a popular restaurant in the state capital and forcibly took Sowore away. Some witnesses alleged that the attackers were political thugs linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
However, the police described the alleged kidnapping as unfounded, saying Sowore was involved in an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Sunday Abutu, said the police were alerted immediately and swiftly deployed officers to the scene, who rescued the activist.
According to the police, Sowore sustained a minor injury and is receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.
The Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a discreet investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The command urged the public to remain calm and disregard reports of an alleged abduction, warning against the circulation of unverified information capable of causing panic and tension.
