Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered Rongtai Building Materials Nigeria Limited to strengthen safety measures after reports that at least five workers died at the company’s facility in Utesi, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, within the past month.
The governor visited the factory on Wednesday following a violent protest by workers and youths from the host community over the death of a forklift operator at the facility.
According to reports, some of the workers died from electrocution, while others reportedly fell from a crane. The latest death sparked unrest, during which protesters set part of the company’s premises ablaze, destroying more than 20 vehicles and motorcycles.
Addressing the management during the visit, Okpebholo described the incident as tragic and condemned the attack on the factory. He stressed that the company must prioritise the safety and welfare of its workers.
“The protest was triggered by anger over the death of a young man who worked for this company. Our culture values life, and I advise you to ensure adequate safety measures are put in place to protect your staff,” the governor said.
Okpebholo commended the company’s investment in Edo State but urged it to strengthen its corporate social responsibility by improving infrastructure within and around the facility. He noted that the company was already constructing a clinic, procuring an ambulance and recruiting medical personnel.
The governor also called on the company to repair access roads around the premises, saying poor roads create opportunities for criminal activities and attacks on vehicles entering the factory.
He disclosed that he had discussed with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, the establishment of a police post and accommodation for officers to improve security around the factory and the host community.
Responding on behalf of the company, Huang Shibin thanked the governor for visiting the facility to assess the situation firsthand. He said the company had carried out several corporate social responsibility initiatives but alleged that some community leaders had diverted benefits meant for residents.
Huang appealed to the state government to enhance security in the area and provide a peaceful environment for the company to continue its operations and protect its workforce.
