The immediate past National Secretary of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), Alhaji Abubakar Imam, has commended the Madawaki and Sarkin Gobir of Ilorin, Alhaji Yakubu Garba Gobir, for mediating in the recent political tension involving Senator Saliu Mustapha and supporters of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
In a message of appreciation dated August 25, 2026, Imam described Gobir’s intervention as a timely demonstration of patriotism and statesmanship that reflects the peace-loving tradition of the Ilorin Emirate.
He said Gobir’s mediation helped ease tensions and promoted dialogue at a time of heightened political disagreement within the emirate.
Imam also recalled a similar intervention by Gobir during the contest for the Kwara Central Senatorial seat about four years ago between Senator Saliu Mustapha of the APC and former Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi of the PDP. According to him, the effort contributed to reducing political tension and fostering unity.
The former IEDPU secretary linked Gobir’s role to the longstanding legacy of the Gobir family in promoting peace and reconciliation, citing the contributions of several prominent family members to public service and community development.
He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, scholars and socio-cultural organisations across the Ilorin Emirate to emulate Gobir’s example and support ongoing efforts to promote peace and unity in the community.
Imam stressed that while political contests and elections are temporary, preserving the unity and tranquillity of the Ilorin Emirate should remain a collective priority.
He also prayed for continued good health, wisdom and strength for Alhaji Yakubu Garba Gobir as he continues to serve the Ilorin Emirate and humanity.
