The Plateau State Government has directed all public and private primary and secondary schools to resume academic activities on Monday, September 14, 2026, as the new academic session begins, following measures to contain suspected cases of diphtheria in parts of the state.
The directive reverses the temporary closure of schools ordered on September 7 as a precautionary measure. The closure was intended to give health authorities time to assess the situation and strengthen disease surveillance and response.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, said the resumption was in line with the government’s commitment to protecting pupils, students, teachers and other members of the school community while ensuring continuity in education.
The government said additional health measures were being implemented ahead of reopening to minimise the risk of transmission. School authorities were directed to maintain clean and hygienic learning environments and remain vigilant for symptoms associated with diphtheria.
“Teachers and school management are encouraged to remain vigilant for symptoms or signs suggestive of Diphtheria and promptly alert the appropriate health authorities,” the statement said.
Parents and guardians were also urged to maintain good personal hygiene, including regular handwashing and clean surroundings, while avoiding unnecessary close contact with people showing suspicious symptoms.
The government advised parents to seek medical attention promptly if a child or household member develops concerning symptoms. It warned against self-medication or concealing suspected cases, stressing that early detection and appropriate treatment were critical to preventing further spread.
“Any suspected or identified case should be taken immediately to the nearest health centre or appropriate health facility for proper assessment and management,” the government said.
The government called on parents, guardians, school proprietors, teachers and students to comply with health advisories and support efforts to ensure a safe resumption of academic activities.
