Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has said state governors, rather than President Bola Tinubu, should account for how the financial gains from petrol subsidy removal have been spent.

Abiodun made the remarks on Thursday at an All Progressives Congress rally at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, according to a video of the event shared by Mirage Eye.

Speaking in Yoruba, the governor said increased allocations to states following the removal of the subsidy meant governors were better positioned to explain how the additional funds had been used.

“They want to bring back subsidy. Are they mad? They were asking our leader to explain what he did with subsidy removal gains,” Abiodun said.

“It is we (governors) that should make such explanations because it is we, state governors, that collect the money.”

Abiodun said the additional funds had helped states finance infrastructure and support programmes, including roads, schools, housing, airports and incentives for farmers.

The governor also dismissed the prospects of opposition parties in the 2027 elections, expressing confidence that the APC would defeat its rivals.

The debate over the use of additional government revenue following the subsidy removal has become a major political issue ahead of the 2027 elections. Opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, have called for greater accountability while advocating changes to the current fuel pricing regime.

The Tinubu administration has defended the June 2023 removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that it redirected funds previously used to keep fuel prices artificially low. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said in August that the policy saved the federation N15.8 trillion between June 2023 and December 2025.
