The Office of the Vice President has clarified recent comments made by Vice President Kashim Shettima regarding the political support President Bola Tinubu received from northern governors prior to the 2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary.

In a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communication, the vice president’s office explained that the reference to six northern governors pertained strictly to political consultations leading up to the June 2022 primary.

“It was not a comment on the position of northern APC governors following President Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s candidate, nor was it intended to question their support during the 2023 presidential election,” the statement read.

The clarification emphasized that after the primary election, northern APC governors rallied solidly behind the presidential ticket, playing pivotal roles in the campaign and general election victory.

According to the release, Vice President Shettima holds deep regard for northern governors and other party leaders, acknowledging their individual and collective contributions to the administration’s success.

“The Vice President regrets any interpretation of his remarks that may have suggested otherwise and hopes this clarification places the comments in their proper context,” the statement added.

The vice president also commended the Nigerian media for its ongoing professionalism, urging continued accuracy and contextual reporting of public remarks as the nation looks toward future political cycles.
