Several people were feared dead after a helicopter crashed in a swampy area of Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday.
A source who spoke about the incident said the crash occurred in a creek area that was difficult to access. The exact number of casualties was not immediately known, although the source said some of the helicopter’s occupants were believed to have died.
According to the source, residents heard a loud sound from the area but were unable to reach the crash site because of the swampy terrain.
Police and military personnel later arrived at the scene to begin rescue efforts.
“It happened this morning. We heard a very loud sound in the area where the incident occurred, but we could not get there because the place is a swampy area inside the creek,” the source said.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the crash and said an investigation had begun to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said details were still emerging and urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
“The public will be duly informed as soon as further credible information becomes available,” Jimoh said.
