The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that all 25 people aboard an ATR-42 aircraft died after it crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State.
The aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred, according to the NAF.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the aircraft was carrying five crew members and 20 passengers.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, expressed condolences to the victims’ families, colleagues and loved ones, describing the crash as “a deeply painful moment for the Nigerian Air Force and the nation.”
The NAF said search-and-rescue operations were launched immediately in coordination with relevant authorities. However, no survivors were found.
Those on board included the flight captain, Squadron Leader MI Aburime; co-pilots Squadron Leaders AP Man-Ugwueje and Flight Lieutenant IS Bako; and aircraft technicians Warrant Officer Abubakar A and Corporal Uguru HC.
Among the passengers were Flight Lieutenant TL Lazarus, Flight Lieutenant M Akinloye, Flying Officer IM Adeshina, Master Warrant Officers Onwuka F and Matini BA, and other serving military personnel and civilians, Mrs Ezeh Nneka,Godstmine Tarabina,Joy Micheal,. Sunday Micheal,Ukeme David, Gideon Omotola
Aneke has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. The NAF said it would provide verified updates as the investigation progresses.
The Air Force urged the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information while respecting the privacy and dignity of the victims’ families. A condolence register has also been opened at NAF headquarters in Abuja for officials, security chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps and other well-wishers.
