Arise Television’s Morning Show anchor, Rufai Oseni, has criticised the Federal Government’s proposed N70,000 monthly transport subsidy for civil servants, saying it would be insufficient to cover commuting costs for workers who live on the Lagos mainland and work on the island.
Oseni raised the concern in a Facebook post on Wednesday, citing a conversation with a member of his studio’s staff who reportedly spends about N7,000 daily on transportation.
According to him, the worker’s monthly transport expenses amount to more than twice Nigeria’s minimum wage, highlighting the financial pressure facing some commuters in Lagos.
Oseni argued that the proposed allowance would cover only about half of the commuting costs of some government workers in the state.
“I got talking to a member of staff at the studio yesterday, and he confirmed he spends about N7,000 on transport every day,” he wrote.
He added that the N70,000 subsidy would be inadequate for civil servants who travel daily from the mainland to workplaces on Lagos Island.
The Federal Government announced the monthly transport allowance on Tuesday as part of efforts to ease the financial burden on civil servants amid rising living costs.
