OPay has explained how customers can check their eligibility for the Federal Government’s monthly N50,000 cash support for vulnerable Nigerians, warning that the intervention is limited to approved beneficiaries.
The digital financial services provider said eligible customers would receive a pop-up notification on their OPay app homepage, which they must click to proceed with the next steps.
In a post on its X handle on Tuesday, the company clarified that customers who do not see the notification are not eligible for the support. It also stressed that it does not determine who qualifies for the programme.
OPay advised customers seeking further assistance to contact the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) helpline on 0700-022-2222.
The company also warned against fraud, saying it would never request customers’ personal identification numbers or one-time passwords to process relief payments. It cautioned users against paying agents or clicking unverified links.
Customers were advised to check their eligibility only through the official OPay app or the USSD code *955*20#.
The clarification follows the Federal Government’s announcement of the commencement of monthly N50,000 payments under NERSI, a presidential initiative designed to support vulnerable households amid rising living costs.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the programme on October 30, saying eligible beneficiaries would receive the support to help meet essential needs. The scheme will be reviewed regularly.
According to the minister, the government is working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure and transparent payments. Beneficiaries are expected to receive an SMS requesting their consent before funds are transferred directly to their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
Other participating providers and their USSD codes include ALAT by Wema (*945*23#), MoMo PSB (*671*0#), NairaGram (*726*00#) and Moniepoint (*557*327#). The government has said no application, registration fee or payment through agents is required.
