Soldiers Shoot Ogun Government Enforcement Staff Dead

A member of an ad-hoc enforcement team from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has been shot dead during a building regulation operation in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area.

The victim, identified as Oluwaseyi Adeoye, was reportedly killed on Monday when soldiers allegedly opened fire to disperse officials enforcing compliance at Ganic Company along the Sagamu–Abeokuta Expressway in Orile-Imo.

Sources said the enforcement team had visited the company to demolish a perimeter fence alleged to violate approved building regulations. The operation was said to have been resisted by armed soldiers who were reportedly guarding the private property.

Tension escalated when the soldiers confronted the officials and the policemen who accompanied them. An eyewitness described the shooting as chaotic, alleging that the troops fired sporadically and attacked security personnel on the scene.

“The soldiers should have exercised restraint. They even attacked the policemen who accompanied the officials. They shot sporadically and could have killed everyone if others had not fled,” the source said.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tunji Odulami, confirmed the incident and said the state government had reached out to the military to identify those involved.

“This should not have happened. We are working with relevant security agencies to identify those responsible and ensure due process is followed,” Mr. Odulami stated.

The police public relations officer in Ogun State, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said an investigation had been opened into the incident.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the State General Hospital morgue in Ijaye, Abeokuta, pending further procedures.
