
The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail of N200 million each to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, over charges of alleged terrorism and unlawful possession of firearms.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the bail on Friday after hearing an application argued by the defence counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN). The judge ordered that both defendants be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of their bail conditions.
As part of the conditions, each defendant is to produce two sureties in like sum. One surety must own landed property in either Maitama or Asokoro, Abuja. The court directed that title documents of the properties be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar, along with valid international passports.
The sureties are also required to depose to affidavits of means and submit two recent passport photographs. In addition, the defendants must deposit their international passports and passport photographs with the court.
Justice Abdulmalik fixed March 4 for the commencement of trial.
The Department of State Services had arraigned Malami and his son on a five-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/63/2026. The charges include alleged failure to prosecute suspected terrorism financiers and unlawful possession of firearms.
According to the prosecution, Malami allegedly failed to act on case files relating to suspected terrorism financiers that were forwarded to him during his tenure as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, contrary to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The defendants were also accused of unlawfully keeping a Sturm Magnum firearm, live cartridges and expended cartridges at their residence in Gesse Phase II, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, in violation of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and the Firearms Act, 2004.
Both defendants have denied the allegations as the case proceeds to trial.
