Russia Condemns US-Israel Strikes on Iran as Escalation

Russia has condemned reported airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, describing the operation as a “premeditated and unprovoked” act of armed aggression conducted amid ongoing diplomatic efforts.

In a statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moscow accused Washington and Tel Aviv of deliberately escalating tensions in the Middle East. It argued that the strikes were carried out while negotiations were reportedly continuing, calling the timing “reprehensible” and suggesting the action undermined diplomatic engagement.

Russia said it considers the attacks a violation of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. It described the operation as a deliberate attempt to escalate conflict under the “cover” of talks and warned against further destabilization in the region.

While strongly condemning the strikes, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow is prepared to play a mediating role and assist in efforts to pursue peaceful solutions to the crisis.

The developments followed coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Saturday, February 28, targeting sites in Iran linked to its nuclear and missile programs. The action marked a significant escalation in regional tensions.

Iran responded with missile attacks on U.S. and Israeli military positions in the region, with reports of casualties, including non-combatants, and heightened security concerns.

European Union leaders also expressed concern over the situation, describing the escalation as alarming and urging maximum restraint. EU officials emphasized the need to protect civilians, uphold international law, and return to diplomacy to prevent wider conflict.

Several EU member states reiterated support for continued sanctions targeting individuals and entities linked to repression and destabilizing activities, while warning that further escalation could threaten regional stability and nuclear safety.
