Residents of Bargaja community have denied reports that the town is experiencing a mass relocation due to security challenges, saying the movement of people was limited and has largely been halted by security forces.
Earlier reports suggested that residents were fleeing en masse following repeated attacks by bandits. However, a local source told the Nigerian News Agency on Monday that the exodus was not as widespread as depicted in videos circulating on social media.
The source, who asked to remain anonymous, explained that while some residents initially left, the deployment of army personnel and other security operatives persuaded many to stay.
Malam Altine Guyawa confirmed that bandits attacked the community on Saturday, prompting some residents to consider relocating as a precautionary measure.
He noted that the community, together with local vigilantes, has historically managed sporadic attacks, and the presence of security forces has strengthened defensive efforts.
Another resident said pockets of banditry had occurred in the area, with confrontations between locals and attackers resulting in casualties on both sides, creating fear among some residents.
A security official confirmed that military troops had engaged a gang of bandits attempting to strike Bargaja and neighboring villages in Isa LGA. The rapid response team successfully repelled the attackers and reassured residents regarding the need for relocation.
“The pictures on social media likely show a few individuals who migrated earlier. The majority of residents rescinded their decision to leave after consultations with security forces,” the source said.
The official added that the incident demonstrated the proactiveness and effectiveness of the Nigerian Army in averting attacks, noting that the situation in the community is currently stable and under control.
The Sokoto Police Command, through Public Relations Officer Ahmad Rufa’i, said it is conducting a discreet investigation and would update the public on developments.
