The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, hosted senior government officials for an Iftar at his Gidan Rumfa Palace on Tuesday, followed by a private meeting with a delegation representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The governor’s office confirmed the closed-door meeting in a Facebook post on Wednesday, shared by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
“Shortly after the Iftar at the Emir’s Palace, the Governor’s delegation had a closed-door meeting with His Highness,” Dawakin Tofa stated.
The delegation included the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim; the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Sulaiman Wali Sani; and Dawakin Tofa himself.
The meeting comes amid the ongoing Emirship dispute in Kano, which arose after Sanusi II was reinstated by Governor Yusuf in 2024.
The reinstatement remains contested in court by Aminu Ado Bayero, who challenges the legality of the governor’s decision.
Observers note that the private discussion may have focused on governance, security, and ongoing efforts to manage tensions within the emirate.
The Iftar gathering at the palace also served to strengthen ties between the emirate and the state government during the Ramadan period.
This engagement marks another high-profile interaction in the politically sensitive context of Kano’s traditional leadership and government relations.
No official statements were released regarding specific outcomes from the meeting, but the event underscores ongoing efforts to maintain dialogue amid the protracted emirship dispute.
