Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation following its ranking in the latest Global Terrorism Index.
In a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, Obi described the report as an indictment of leadership, noting that Nigeria recorded one of the highest increases in terrorism-related deaths globally.
“The latest Global Terrorism Index report ranks Nigeria among the most terrorised nations in the world, showing one of the highest increases in deaths from terrorism. This is a painful indictment of failed leadership,” he said.
He added that while several countries have made progress in reducing terrorism, Nigeria appears to be moving in the opposite direction.
Obi attributed the trend to weak governance, corruption, poor prioritisation, and a lack of adherence to the rule of law, arguing that the government has failed in its primary responsibility of ensuring citizens’ safety.
He highlighted persistent threats across the country, including insurgency linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, as well as widespread kidnappings and attacks by armed groups in rural areas.
Questioning the role of government, Obi asked why violence continues to be normalised despite worsening conditions.
He called for urgent and decisive action, stressing that the current trajectory must not be accepted as inevitable.
“A safe and secure Nigeria is not too much to ask; it is the right of every citizen, and it must be delivered,” he said.
