The Nigerian Army has arrested a serving soldier, Amoke Simon, over alleged involvement in a N114 million fraud and false claims linked to the killing of notorious kidnapping kingpin Obioma Nwankwo, also known as Osisikankwu.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development on Monday in a post on X, stating that the suspect is a member of the Army Engineers Corps attached to a regiment in Lagos.
According to the report, the soldier was arrested at Port Harcourt International Airport while attempting to travel to Abuja. The operation was carried out by joint troops from the 14 Brigade and the 6 Division Provost Groups following ongoing investigations into allegations of fraud and impersonation.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect allegedly deceived the Abia State Government by presenting himself as a key participant in the 2010 operation that led to the elimination of Osisikankwu. The claim reportedly earned him official recognition and a promise of support, including medical assistance.
Further investigations also linked the suspect to additional fraud cases involving individuals and organizations, with security sources alleging he obtained about N100 million from a company, N6 million from an individual, and another N8 million from a group under false pretences.
Sources added that the suspect had previously been on the radar of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over related allegations before his arrest.
Authorities are continuing investigations as part of efforts to address misconduct within the ranks and ensure accountability.
