Senate Orders Probe into Plateau Killings

The Senate on Tuesday directed the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to investigate the March 29 killings in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 28 people were reported dead.

Lawmakers called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack and resolved to send a delegation led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to commiserate with victims and residents of the state.

The resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Senators Diket Plang and Dachung Mwadkon, who raised concerns over worsening insecurity in Kanam and Jos North local government areas.

Leading debate on the motion, Plang said Plateau, once known as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” has witnessed a resurgence of violence after years of relative calm. He cited recent attacks in Kanam earlier in March and the Anguwan Rukuba incident, which targeted residents during routine daily activities.

According to him, the attacks appeared coordinated and focused on densely populated civilian areas, heightening fears of further escalation. He also reported an ambush along the Garga axis in Kanam that claimed the lives of members of a joint security patrol team.

Lawmakers warned that the crisis—driven by complex economic, ethnic, and religious factors—is displacing farmers and posing a threat to food security in the affected areas.

The Senate urged security agencies to intensify proactive measures, including establishing permanent security bases in vulnerable communities, strengthening intelligence gathering, and deploying aerial surveillance to track down attackers.

It also called for increased recruitment into the police and armed forces to address manpower shortages affecting security operations nationwide.

In addition, senators observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims and appealed to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to provide food, medical supplies, and shelter for displaced families.
