A post by Elon Musk has triggered widespread reactions among Nigerian social media users after many misinterpreted his reference to “APC” in a tweet describing the Tesla Cybertruck.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the Cybertruck “is an APC from the future,” referring to its resemblance to an Armoured Personnel Carrier, a military transport vehicle.
However, the comment drew strong attention in Nigeria, where many users are more familiar with “APC” as the acronym for the ruling All Progressives Congress, the party that produced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The tweet quickly generated reactions from Nigerian users, some of whom initially assumed Musk was referring to the political party rather than the military term. The misunderstanding sparked confusion, humour, and criticism in the comment section.
One user identified as Daily Pulse asked, “Which APC are you referring to, sir?”
Another user, First Principles, suggested Musk avoid using the abbreviation, saying it carries strong political associations in Nigeria and evokes negative sentiments among some citizens.
A different commenter, Dhamilarey, wrote that Musk should consider using another term to avoid backlash, warning jokingly that Nigerians might begin to boycott Tesla products if the abbreviation continued to be used.
Another user, Prom Prom, reacted humorously, saying the tweet initially caused alarm before they realised the intended meaning.
The reactions highlight how global social media posts can take on different meanings across regions, especially where acronyms overlap with sensitive political identities.
