Jubilation Greets Garo’s Nomination as Kano Deputy Governor

Residents of Kano State took to the streets on Wednesday to celebrate the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo as deputy governor by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The celebrations began shortly after the announcement was made in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, with supporters gathering across parts of Kano metropolis and in several local government areas, including Kabo Local Government Area.

Videos circulating online showed groups of youths riding motorcycles, driving through major roads, and chanting slogans such as “Sai Abba” and “Sai Garo” in support of the governor and the nominee. Some participants carried portraits of both leaders as they moved through the streets in celebration.

The gatherings remained largely peaceful despite the large turnout in different parts of the state.

Garo’s nomination followed the resignation of former Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026, which created a vacancy in the state’s executive council.

Governor Yusuf has since forwarded Garo’s name to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional provisions.

According to the governor’s office, the nomination followed consultations with political stakeholders and was aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring continuity in service delivery across the state.

Garo, 48, has more than two decades of political experience, having served as State Organising Secretary, Special Adviser to the governor, Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He was also the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.

The Kano State House of Assembly has scheduled his screening for Monday, after which he is expected to assume office if confirmed.
